Carol, big fan but I don't know that we've met. Your employer brings up an interesting topic in free and open source software that I'd like to get your thoughts on.

Microsoft has made great strides in their open source participation over the last five years and I'm thankful for that. At the same time, much of their participation has been in a model that is very common among larger companies: heavy FOSS participation and usage on the backend and developer side but minimal FOSS participation on end-user software. This is particularly noticeable in tools like VS Code where the "official" binary is released under a proprietary license even though it is almost entirely comprised of FOSS software. Other examples come to mind like Google Chrome and Docker.

How do you think this problem should be addressed? And do you think OSI should be involved in addressing that issue?

    Hi Eric -

I think these are a few separate things. Microsoft has indeed made great strides and indeed has many places to continue to grow and improve. I would love to talk more with the VS Code team and you about this topic as an employee of Microsoft, but would want to keep that separate from my volunteer work for the OSI. We always want to hear from the community, and this is exactly the sort of thing it would be great to discuss further. I can't speak for Google Chrome or Docker, I don't work on those projects.

My work as a board director for the OSI is to directly facilitate OSI in its mission, which is promoting and protecting open source and stewarding the OSD. In that role I'm looking to the community and what consensus it's come to and then working with my fellow directors to for example, review a license.

This is the sort of topic I'd want to work with the community in building an understanding of if and/or how this intersects with the OSD. What are your thoughts? The OSI has in the past tried to work in the space "beyond licensing," to varying success. Would you want the OSI to facilitate these sort of discussions that are open source-related but not about licensing per se?
