Hello Charles, I'm very interested in your goal of raising awareness of open source principles, especially your idea to "work with code development platforms (GitHub, Gitlab, Bitbucket and others) to educate developers about Open Source and its licenses". How exactly do you envision working with code development platforms like GitHub?
That's a good question. I think we should work with these platforms to ensure that each time a project is created, a page or a ribbon (or some splash screen) appears with a message about information about the available choice of licenses and a short message about Open Source Software (this can have a link that points to a dedicated page on the topic). These platforms could also communicate about Open Source Software, its importance and ultimately link to OSI. If we go more in details, there's some real work to be done with each of these platforms in order to ensure the user can properly select from a list of OSI approved licenses and can do it in an easy and informed way. That's just a few ideas on this topic - but it's real work if we want to do it and ensure we have the buy-in from these platforms.
Good points! Currently on GitHub when you choose a license for a new repository, the help link directs to https://choosealicense.com/ which appears to be run by GitHub itself, and doesn't event mention the OSI anywhere on it (or anywhere I was able to find!). Years ago when I started my first repositories and chose a license I had no idea the OSI existed!
