3 +**About Me**
4 +
5 +I'm Carol Smith, currently a partnership manager in the education department at GitHub. I manage our Student Developer Pack, a suite of developer tools offered for free to students all over the world, as well as other education outreach and initiatives.
3 3  \\Previous to GitHub I worked at Google for over 10 years. I started as an administrative assistant in 2005, worked my way into network operations, then into software project management, and finally into managing Google Summer of Code (GSoC). I oversaw 6 incredibly successful years in GSoC's life, including the 10th anniversary of the program. That year we expanded the number of participating students and organizations as well as raised the students' stipend and hosted a 500-person "reunion" for participants from all 10 years of the program. I was honored to oversee the program for the time I did.
4 -\\Managing GSoC is also when I found my passion for open source and its communities. I have met countless people in the open source world who have passion, talent, and drive to make the world a better place for themselves and others. I knew that I wanted to stay involved in open source as long as I could after I stopped managing GSoC. Working at GitHub has helped me stay involved in open source over the last year, and now I am running for the Open Source Initiative Board to deepen my involvement further with these incredible people and technologies. I hope to help the OSI make excellent policy and business decisions that will keep it thriving and vibrant as well as reflective of the ever-evolving communities it represents.

9 +**Why I'm Running**
10 +
11 +OSI's mission lines up well with my own experience. I bring to the table specific experience in these three focus areas:
12 +
13 +
14 +* Education and Outreach. OSI has already worked diligently at educating and supporting its own communities as well as reaching out to new audiences to enrich the open source ecosystem. It should continue to focus heavily there. I have worked extensively in education and outreach around open source for over 8 years and can foster that ongoing work as a board member.
15 +* Fundraising and Memberships. OSI's membership base is healthy, and should continue to grow. I feel fundraising and membership work in the future should build on that strong base and continue to extend its arms to new groups and audiences. I managed the world's most respected philanthropic program in open source for 6 years and know how to bring together the ideals of free software and the funding.
16 +* New Programs and Initiatives. OSI has been involved in many important initiatives in the past with the community, businesses, and individuals. The OSI Incubator Program as well as its involvement with the Open Source Survey are two such examples. OSI should continue to identify programs and initiatives that help user groups work better and thrive. I have successfully managed everything from small, topical meet-ups to large-scale, worldwide programs in open source and want to help OSI do the same.
