Wiki Gardener

There is a theory that any wiki which has more than 10 contributors, but less than 100 will eventually become a jungle of pages that nobody can make heads and tails of. With less, the people usually know it well enough to understand the structure, but with more than 100 active users Wiki Gardeners will appear.

A Wiki Gardener is a person who monitors a wiki on behalf of the community—ensuring continuity, consistency, accuracy completeness and relevance.

In a highly distributed organization, where self-motivated and self-directed individuals form affinity groups, creating and sustaining a community of shared knowledge and coordinated practice is paramount. One of the key components for creating such an ecosystem, is an asynchronous communications platform like a wiki. The OSI wiki serves as an idea incubator, discussion forum, project management platform, knowledgebase and assessment engine. The OSI seeks to designate and empower a Wiki Gardener to manage not only the content, architecture and functionality of the OSI wiki, but the community who chooses to engage.

Duties

  • Advocacy: Introducing the wiki and wiki practices to new members while fostering participation among current users.
  • Development: Working with OSI contractors to identify and maintain various features and functionality that enables the emergence and sharing of wiki content.
  • Editing: Review, verify and update content developed by the wiki community to ensure accuracy, consistency and continuity.
  • Organization: Implement various methods to ensure content find-ability: taxonomies, tags, hierarchies, navigation, search, indexes, links, etc.
  • Maintenance: Ensure the wiki operates as expected, from links and tools to the site itself.
  • End-user Support: Provide on demand training directly to end users while promoting best practices as an exemplar user.
  • Technical Support: Working with contracted support providers ensure the wiki is up and available.
