Hi!

I'm Carol Smith, currently a partnership manager in the education department at GitHub. I manage our Student Developer Pack, a suite of developer tools offered for free to students all over the world, as well as other education outreach and initiatives.

Previous to GitHub I worked at Google for over 10 years. I started as an administrative assistant in 2005, worked my way into network operations, then into software project management, and finally into managing Google Summer of Code (GSoC). I oversaw 6 incredibly successful years in GSoC's life, including the 10th anniversary of the program. That year we expanded the number of participating students and organizations as well as raised the students' stipend and hosted a 500-person "reunion" for participants from all 10 years of the program. I was honored to oversee the program for the time I did.

Managing GSoC is also when I found my passion for open source and its communities. I have met countless people in the open source world who have passion, talent, and drive to make the world a better place for themselves and others. I knew that I wanted to stay involved in open source as long as I could after I stopped managing GSoC. Working at GitHub has helped me stay involved in open source over the last year, and now I am running for the Open Source Initiative Board to deepen my involvement further with these incredible people and technologies. I hope to help the OSI make excellent policy and business decisions that will keep it thriving and vibrant as well as reflective of the ever-evolving communities it represents.

Cheers,
Carol
